WHAT IS THE THEME OF OEDIPUS? (50 POINTS)
The theme is, I believe, that you cannot run from what you are destined to be or to do. Oedipus denied what Teiresias told him in the beginning of the play, which was that he was the killer of the king and he even told Oedipus that he would soon become like him and he didn't listen. This is what i took from the play because, in the end, he was the son that killed his father and that married his mother. Also, he became blind like Teiresias because of his own doing.
What happened: what were the conflicts in the work? What was the most important moment in the work? Does the author resolve the conflict? How did the work end?
Oedipus is trying to rid his kingdom of the pollution. He soon learns that he has to rid of the man that killed the former king in order to rid the kingdom of the pollution, which is the main conflict. In the journey of trying to learn about who killed the former king, he learns more about himself. Oedipus soon learns that he is the son of the former king and the killer of the king. The author does resolve the conflict because in the end, he was discussing what his punishment would be since they didn't kill him. The work ended with Oedipus and Creon discussing his punishment.
What is the subject? If you were to tell a friend what the work of literature was "about", how would you describe it? What was the topic?
The subject is tragedy. I would tell my friends that it is about how Oedipus caused himself pain because of his reckless decisions. The topic would be Greek mythology
What about the main character? How does he/she change? Does the protagonist affect other characters? How does this character relate to others?
The main character does change because his reckless decisions and his temper catch up to him and get back at him. The protagonist affects the other characters by bringing the pollution onto the town. This character hardly relates to any of the other characters, but they do have some relations. For example, the main character is now blind like the old prophet.
I would re-frame the theme as "Can destiny and fate be changed? Or does it have to stay as it is supposed to be?"
